Taking Out the Trash

Allergies are rampant. To look at the general population of a school or office building, finding one individual who can walk into any situation without some form of reaction is more the anomaly than the rule. Growing up, peanuts were the major verboten food – but now all nuts, dairy, soy, eggs, perfumes and even certain deodorants have been banned from some public places to protect those who may react. Even something as “healthy” as a vaccine can turn into a dire toxin: a colleague of mine who inoculated her first child with the MMR vaccine watched in horror as her 2-year-old daughter’s nervous systems shut down, causing her brain to swell dangerously. Emergency operations saved her life, but she is now severely autistic. Her second child reacted to a different vaccine which resulted in a three-year-long streptococcal ear infection that would not respond to any standard drug therapy. Not only are there true allergies, regulated by your body’s five Ig antibodies, but there are also sensitivity reactions. Sensitivities might have the same signs as an allergic reaction, but it’s not the antibodies doing the military action.

Between all the foods, smells, touches, particles and vapours out there (not to mention the contaminations from anything), why is it now that all of these are causing problems? Not only that, but how are we to cope? In the holistic community, the generally accepted explanation for the extreme increase in reactions comes down to two things: overexposure to a certain thing and what’s called the “barrel effect”.

Repeated exposure to anything, be it food, scent or other substance, can suddenly and unexplainably become a pathogen. This is because your body commonly develops “gaps” in it’s sensory defence systems (especially in the case of low vitamin and mineral levels), which let foreign molecules into the body. When these systems are “used” to a certain item, the first “soldiers” let these into the bloodstream where they are attacked by white blood cells and causing a reaction. Once the blood cells can recognize these particles a long-term sensitivity response takes hold and can worsen over time.

The “barrel effect” is a visually stimulating name for the build-up of all the risky substances your body regularly takes in over your lifetime (think of it like a trash can). Unlike the “repeated exposure” cause of reactions, the proverbial barrel fills up with the toxins from mental and physical stress, pollution, foods, medications and chemicals. But this container of life can only fill so much – eventually the rings break and unleash any kind of problems from allergies, to hypertension, to mental illness.

Emptying the “barrel” (taking out the “trash”) involves letting go of the stresses with good experiences and proper rest, regular exercise and social activity, including cleaning out and un-cluttering your living and working spaces. Finding methods of removing the heavy metals, chemicals, harmful bacteria and parasites in your body as well as “cleaning” out the remnants of undigested food that lines your colon walls (which holds onto toxin-filled bile from the liver’s detox processes and feeds the “bad” bacteria). As disgusting as it may sound, this full-body cleansing plan has shown proven results in either eliminating or drastically reducing the severity of allergic and sensitivity reactions. The same “cleanout” can be used for repeated exposure issues.

Preventing the problems from coming back or getting worse involves adopting a better diet, a better lifestyle, and a greater appreciation for everything that life throws at you and how you cope with it day to day. The less stuff you throw in the garbage, the less you have to haul out in the end. After all, doesn’t everyone hate taking out the trash?

Overall, I want to bring back the desire for good quality, homemade, (mostly) healthy food into the hearts and kitchens of families so that the next generation will be less box-reliant than mine. I firmly believe that any “homemade” food, even when labelled as "naughty", is a more wholesome treat than pre-packaged, cookie-cutter junk. With the knowledge of good food (and how to cook good food) as a base, a healthy lifestyle can follow, and then anything is possible!

Today, my love for teaching is branching out even further - I'm in Montessori training to solidify my love for the system and working with children and families!
