Freaky Flu Shots

I don't know if this is just USA, but if it is it'll be hitting Canada soon no doubt. These are new facts about this year's flu shot - and doesn't include the other fun goodies like the mercury-laced Thimerosal and (or in rarer Thimerosal-free versions) ethylene glycol (antifreeze), phenol (disinfectant and dye once used by Nazi Germans for quick executions), formaldehyde (embalming fluid and carcinogen), aluminum (a toxic metal used to promote antibody response, associated strongly with Alzheimer's disease) and antibiotics.
  • The needle is now “shallower” and delivers the vaccine under the skin rather than into the muscle. (Developed to make it less painful, but really?)
  • 166 million doses were made this year from the "killed" virus. Guess what. You can't kill viruses!
  • There is a nasal spray format of the vaccine for people under 49 - made from activated virus. Apparently this won't give you the flu and is safe. Um, how?
  • Children younger than 9 are supposed to get two doses of the same vaccine as adults to "fully protect" them. Two doses! The average 9 year old weighs 60 pounds, and we're doing that to them?
  • There’s another version (oh yes, another one!) that is more potent than the "normal" one. Guess what - it's intended for people older than 65. The CDC fully states that "older people’s weakened immune systems may not develop a robust enough response to the standard vaccine to adequately protect them". Okay then, I have an idea! Let's lace their retirement-home issued Ensure with LSD too! Yeah, that's a brilliant plan!

I don't know what to make of all this. I mean if you have to get the shot for work or school, you have to. But most of us are just fine without it, and actually would benefit from not giving our bodies a false alarm that something's wrong. Want to train your immune system to be a better fighter of all the Winter bugs (including the rampant colds), not just the generally rare influenza? Take probiotics, get outside and move, eat a decent, balanced diet and chill out already - the stress ain't helping.

About Me

My photo

I started my "working life" as a holistic and allopathic nutritional consultant with a love of cooking. Teaching the value of wholesome meal choices to families became close to my heart after I battled a long history of struggles with weight and health, and the passion for teaching led me into where I am now. My blog, which focuses on "bringing good taste to healthier food" through creative use of whole grains, fresh produce and acknowledging the importance of the occasional treat, also features a wealth of "specialty diet" friendly recipes for gluten-, egg-, dairy- and sugar- tree nut-free items that everyone can enjoy without alienating those who need them.

Overall, I want to bring back the desire for good quality, homemade, (mostly) healthy food into the hearts and kitchens of families so that the next generation will be less box-reliant than mine. I firmly believe that any “homemade” food, even when labelled as "naughty", is a more wholesome treat than pre-packaged, cookie-cutter junk. With the knowledge of good food (and how to cook good food) as a base, a healthy lifestyle can follow, and then anything is possible!

Today, my love for teaching is branching out even further - I'm in Montessori training to solidify my love for the system and working with children and families!
